Kazi Mtaani Phase one was a social protection program that had the twin objective of ensuring clean environments as one way of combating the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic while at the same time putting money in the pockets of the youth in order to ensure that there were able for fend for their families.

Phase 2 is however designed as an Extended Public Works Project (EPWP) where the Government aims to utilize local labour to provide employment for low income workers living in the informal and rural settlements while improving urban infrastructure and service delivery in 34 counties.

The Kazi Mtaani which is also known as the National Hygiene Program (NHP), is a national initiative that kicked off in April 2020 and which was designed to cushion the most vulnerable people from the effects and response strategies of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first phase of Kazi Mtaani kicked off as a pilot program that focused on select informal settlements in the 8 counties of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kilifi, Kwale, and Mandera.
